In November 2017, a year to the day since they announced their return with a brand new single ‘On Hold’ and news of a third full length album, I See You, The xx revealed a stunning short film ‘We See You - Berlin’. Created by Berlin-based director and filmmaker Sylvie Weber, the film featured live and documentary footage from The xx’s headline set at Berlin’s Lollapalooza festival in September alongside intimate portraits of some of the people who attended the show. ‘We See You – Berlin’ saw Weber creating an emotive depiction of fans in this city, exploring their relationship with the band, and in turn the band's relationship with the city and the fans there.
Today sees the release of ‘We See You – Jakarta’, the latest in The xx’s ‘We See You’ series which is supported by and exclusively available on YouTube. It further celebrates the incredibly close bond between The xx and their fans, affectionately turning the spotlight onto the audience. Directed by acclaimed Jakarta-based filmmaker Mouly Surya, ‘We See You – Jakarta’ was shot entirely in the Indonesian capital city, coinciding with The xx’s first ever Jakarta live show in January of this year (at the JI Expo Kemayoran venue), and features the talents of Herald Reynaldo and Xandega Tahajuansya covering ‘On Hold’.
Of the collaboration, Mouly Surya says: “It was an amazing experience for me to have one of my most favourite songs in my own brand of motion picture, as if you could watch how an artist can speak to another artist through their own forms of art.”
While The xx add: “We were thrilled when Mouly Surya agreed to document our Jakarta show and shine a light on our Indonesian fans for "We See You - Jakarta". She made such a poetic short film around them! We hope we enjoy it as much as we do”.
