Smoldering, fearless and pimped Ibeyi-performance at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

The twins performed "Deathless" with a bunch of guests

Ibeyi have kicked off 2018 with a handful of stunning live performances for NPR’s Tiny Desk series, Live From Here with Chris Thile and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. They were joined by the Harlem Gospel Choir and Isaiah Barr of Onyx Collective for a moving performance of their single empowering “Deathless,” which fittingly airs on the last day of Black History Month. The song is a single off of Ibeyi’s sophomore album "Ash "(out on XL Recordings) and was written by Lisa-Kaindé Díaz in the wake of an experience in which the police racially profiled her. “I wrote Deathless as an anthem for everybody,” Lisa-Kaindé says, “for every minority. For everybody that feels that they are nothing, that feels small, that feels not cared about and I want them to listen to our song and for three minutes feel large, powerful, deathless.”

Altough when the sisters present their jazz-soul-hiphop-african beats medley in a duo, they always enchant their audience but this time it was even more powerful because of the Harlem Gospel Choir and Isaiah Barr who joined them with passionate tunes. Fearless, unrestrained, ancient female energies came to life in the forceful, red-black coloured space.

"Ibeyi are musical and spiritual guides for the millennial generation." - Miami Herald

As 2017 came to an end, Ibeyi’s sophomore album Ash was notably included in Pitchfork, NPR, Rolling Stone, FADER, Esquire, Time Out and Remezcla’s “Best of 2017” year-end lists. With Pitchfork explaining, “To hear Ibeyi’s second LP, Ash—minimalistic arrangements of modern jazz, soul, and hip-hop elegantly woven with West African rhythms—is to receive energy carrying the weight of history….Its very existence is proof of a culture that refused to be suppressed, and its beauty a testament to the pain that made it possible.
